Pros and cons of Asian Market Shopper app for iPhone and iPad

Asian Market Shopper app good for

Just downloaded the app. So far so good, but I noticed that after playing a video the app crashes.
Not only is it beautiful, its everything I want to know. I used to walk into Asian grocery markets for fun just because I liked all of the fun packaging. I wished I knew how to cook with some ingredients like bamboo shoots or banana leaves. My Americanized cooking never tasted the same as the restaurants I went to. This app is a god send! I love it and hello sticky rice and mango recipe!!! I can also watch a video on how to make perfect chapati! Yum! Double yum! That alone is worth buying this app! Highly recommend!
Ill probably never get to try all of the ingredients in this app but for my needs its perfect. Tons of info on ingredients and some great recipes that are really just a bonus as far as Im concerned. Photos are detailed and clear, plus you can zoom in to see the labels. The audio pronunciation is cool (although I still might not try that!). Videos are clean and informative with great tips. I think the people who are rating this app with 1 and 2 starts forgot to read the description.
Ive got the authors amazing first two cookbooks on Vietnamese cooking and Asian dumplings (a third on tofu is on the way!), so Im not looking for recipes so much as how to gather ingredients and prepare some of the more complex recipes. The recipes on the app are mostly different from her books, so theyre all new to me. If I were more savvy at Asian cooking, I dont suppose Id need an app like this, but with my minimal experience, its perfect. Everythings easy to navigate, the videos are paced well from different angles, and the pics of all the ingredients help me find exactly what the recipe calls for--in an Asian market or at the farmers market. Im having to change the way I eat pretty seriously, and this app has introduced me to new produce I wouldnt previously have known what to do with. I also appreciate the helpful tips on buying fresh fish and cutting chiles, among others; since these are very common ingredients to all the recipes, they come in handy often.
I know a little bit about Asian food, but specifically when it comes to vegetables, pretty lost about what some look and taste like. Very fun app. And recipes Ive made so far (vinegar chicken, kimchee fried rice, sour shrimp soup) have all been really easy to follow and delicious.
I currently live in Taiwan and have only a basic Mandarin vocabulary. This app is tremendously useful in helping me navigate my local wet-market. Especially useful is the Hanyu Pinyin and the pre-recorded Mandarin voice pronunciation. Please note that not ALL of the ingredients are in Mandarin...some are in Thai etc. Anyhow, for a guy like me, having the pinyin is useful because it empowers me to go and ask vendors for the ingredients. In addition, some of the apps pictures also have the Chinese characters so I am able to just show the shopkeepers what I am looking for. Some people complain about a lack of recipes but that isnt the point of the app. If you want recipes, go get a cookbook. For future versions, I would love to see more ingredients. Very clean, easy to use design. All in all, money very well spent for someone in my situation.

Some bad moments

I thought this might be really great since it had that price tag, but recipes are very limited , there are free apps that have more info on ingredients than this, if it was 99 cents then I wouldnt complain. Nice design but no substance! I would like more Vietnamese recipes and Korean recipes as well to change my mind!
Too expensive for too few recipes most of which can be found for free on the net. This app doesnt even give you web links for purchasing your ingredients, so unless you live in a large city like NYC or LA, you wont be able to cook most of the limited recipes in this app. Not recommend.
The ingredients are very basic. This app is only useful if you have an extremely limited knowledge of asian food. I was disappointed and sorry that I forked over the cash.
This app is beautiful! The design and user interface were thoroughly conceptualized and well thought out. What this app lacks is sustenance and information. The information that is to be found here is thorough but the breadth of entries is paltry and basic. What this app needs are more comprehensive entries on the numerous and unique types of Asian fruits, vegetables and fungi. Most of the entries are for shelf stable products. Entries on galangal and wood ear fungi are a start. When I see entries for tat soi, shisito peppers, dragon fruit, shiso, birds nest and enokitaki (just to name a few) then Ill revise my rating. I do really enjoy your apps. I also have your cheese plate app. Please put more focus on the amount of information in your apps if your going to charge as much as you do.
It has a hand full of recipes. The interface is beautifully made however its just not worth $4.
This app is beautiful and works very well. However, there are a handful of recipes.
